Our Horses

All horses used on riding holidays at Gilfach are well-schooled, well-mannered, fit and forward-going and are not typical “riding school” horses (no offence to the latter intended). Being our ‘pride and joy’, our horses are regularly treated to pleasure rides, competitions and other excursions to keep their minds, bodies and souls fresh, and thus require riders who can ride “real” horses. It is our job to teach you how!

Starting with the biggest….

Al Pacino (Alfie). A 17hh Hannovarian gelding. Hugh's very own horse! Alfie provides our more established clients with that Warmblood wow-factor under saddle.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice N/A, Non-Novice 14st)

Timber (Timber). A 16.3hh ID x TB gelding. Timber is a laid back, uncomplicated ride. He has lovely paces, is a great jumper and a superstar on our hacks.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice N/A, Non-Novice 14st)

Larry the Lad (Larry). A 16.2hh Traditional Irish Cob. Larry can turn his hoof to most tasks, and is willing to give anything "a go" for us. He is a great hack, being happy to go first or last and to keep up with the best of them on some of the longer canters. Along with his training as a driving horse and his skills under saddle on the flat, Larry is a true all-rounder for any rider.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 13st, Non-Novice 14st)

Limonero XVII (Limonero). A truely beautiful grey Andalucian stallion, trained in Spain to a very high level. Limonero offers the non-novice rider the chance to enhance lateral and High School movements and Classical Dressage.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 11st, Non-Novice 13st)

Florence (Floy). A very pretty 15.2hh TB x Cob bay mare. Forward going, sensitive to the aids and with lovely paces making her an ideal Dressage and Jumping schoolmistress. Floy is also a fabulous horse to hack.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 10st, Non-Novice 12st)

George (George). A 15.1hh Irish Cob. Not one of ours, but a livery (seen here ridden by his owner), who occassionally joins the Gilfach team for lessons, jumping and hacks. An enthusiastic but less-than-forward-going chap who is a great asset to his owner (and Gilfach!).

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 12st, Non-Novice 13.5st)

Molly (Molly). A 15.2hh TB x lightweight bay mare. A light, nimble and very honest horse. Another capable school-mistress who can turn her hoof to most tasks. One of our star horses!

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 9st, Non-Novice 11st)

Gwibedog Beatrice (Cherry). A 15.1hh middleweight Welsh Section D, Palomino mare. Cherry, although now in her early 20's, is a forward-going, sure-footed and safe ride—ideal for rides out in our fantastic surroundings. Cherry is also an enthusiastic cross-country and show jumper.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 12st, Non-Novice 13st)

Bobby Boy (Bobby). A characterful 14hh gelding, who is a confidence-giving ride whether in the school, or indeed out on hacks.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 10st, Non-Novice 11st)

Pandora (Pandora). A really sweet, straight-forward mare who is delight to ride within the school, or indeed out on hacks. Another gem!.

(Max Rider Weights - Novice 6st, Non-Novice 8st)

Borba (Borba). A black Lusitano stallion. A handsome, magnificent horse, Borba is can perform movements from basic to High School. A treat to ride for those established enough!!!

(Max Rider Weights - Novice N/A, Non-Novice 12st)

ico539   Ico (Ico). A Carthusian PRE gelding. Ico is working beautifully under saddle, and is already a fantastic novice Classical Dressage horse.
Cajun Treasure Trove (Tez). The son of Simmi and the well-known Lusitano ‘Caju’. Tez was born in 2003 at Gilfach and is growing into a fine young horse with a truly lovely, laid-back nature. One of Sheila's "pride and joys", Tez is a lovely light ride, who occassionally treats selected clients to his WOW factor under saddle!
jewel sept11658   The last 'youngster'
Borbindian Jewel (Jewel), born in May 2006. A promising young mare with, hopefully, a lot to offer for the future
